Services Bureau
The Services Bureau is where logistics, safety, and community impact all come together. From courtrooms to city streets, this bureau keeps Newport News moving — securely and efficiently.
Every year, more than 200,000 people pass through the city’s three court buildings and 13 courtrooms. Our deputies are responsible for making sure those spaces stay safe, organized, and running smoothly. Beyond the courthouse, the bureau also serves over 69,000 court documents annually — ensuring the justice system actually works in real life, not just on paper.
The Services Bureau also manages the transportation of incarcerated individuals — coordinating movements within and outside the City of Newport News for court appearances, medical appointments, and interstate extraditions. It’s precision work that requires trust, training, and accountability.
Beyond security, we’re invested in the community. Through the Sheriff’s Office Workforce, non-violent incarcerated individuals give back by supporting city departments and public events. From festival tent setups and barricades to vegetation control, litter removal, and furniture transport, this program helps keep the city clean, organized, and event-ready.
The result? Real-world job skills, community contribution, and significant savings for taxpayers — proving public service can be smart, efficient, and people-focused all at once.
