NNSO photo to be featured in DOJ's COPS community policing effort
NEWPORT NEWS - Committed to making a difference isn’t just a catchphrase. The motto is a guiding principle for the agency’s personnel dealing with inmates, the public, and the citizens they see each day.
Each year, deputies serve lunch with a big helping of smiles at a city gathering to recognize Newport News citizens who are at least 90 years young. Sgt. U. Ramos was one of several NNSO Civil Enforcement team members waiting tables at the Lifelong Citizens event. Sheriff’s photographer Logan Scherle captured the moment Sgt. Ramos carried a tray to the table to serve two guests.
That photograph will be featured by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) during 2025.
Over 110 law enforcement agencies submitted photos for the Community Policing in Action photo contest; COPS selected photos from just 12 agencies to showcase on their website, social media accounts, and in their e-newsletter, The Community Policing Dispatch.
COPS officials say the contest receives widespread support because it provides law enforcement a platform for sharing positive interactions with the community.
A law enforcement agency can submit only one photo that depicts its community policing in action. Consent forms have to be signed by the people in the image and the agency has to certify that it owns the copyright to the photo.
All photos were submitted by October 30, 2024 and winning photos were announced on January 13, 2025.
