Two inmates escape from Newport News Jail Annex

The search is on for two inmates who escaped from the Newport News Jail Annex on Monday.

John M. Garza and Arley V. Nemo were discovered missing from their cell during routine head count around 7:15 p.m.

Further investigation determined that the men had tunneled through a cell wall leading to the exterior and proceeded to scale the security wall.

Members of the Newport News Sheriff’s Office and Newport News Police Department are actively searching for the men.

Garza, a 37-year-old from Hampton, has been in custody since December 19, 2022 on charges to include contempt of court, probation violations and failure to appear.

Nemo, a 43-year-old Gloucester resident, has been in custody since October 7, 2022 on charges to include credit card fraud, credit card larceny, forgery, possession of burglary tools, grand larceny, contempt of court and probation violation.

Garza is white, 5’2” tall, 100 pounds and has blue eyes and blonde/strawberry-color hair.

Nemo is white, 5’5” tall, 147 pounds and has hazel eyes and is bald.
