The NNSO renews commitment to helping children learn to read

Nnso tutoring from 2023 2024 school year Sworn and civilian staff of the Newport News Sheriff’s Office are helping young children learn to read.

NNSO volunteers are trained each year and then make weekly trips to select Title I schools to spend an hour with K through grade 2 students who are reading below their grade level.

Sheriff Morgan knows it's important to a child’s future that he or she can read.  Students with strong reading skills have a better chance of success – throughout school and in life.

For the 2024-2025 school year, deputies and civilians are paired with students at McIntosh and Hidenwood Elementary schools to give them one-on-one attention to increase their literacy.

The NNSO has teamed up with the Norfolk-based Life Enrichment Center since the 2017-2018 school year.   In 2020, the Sheriff’s Office was honored as the Center’s Partner of the Year for its commitment to helping children reach their grade level in reading and comprehension.

Tutoring is rewarding and a great way to build relationships between students and the deputies who they may see as they grow.
