Major David Hughes retired on December 21, 2023.

The Newport News Sheriff’s Office said goodbye and good luck to Major David Hughes on December 28, 2023.  He officially retired on December 31 after 13 years of service.

Major Hughes began his career with the Newport News Sheriff’s Office in May of 2010 after retiring as Captain from the Norfolk Police Department.  He was with Norfolk PD for 24 years and brought with him a vast amount of knowledge in Patrol Operations, Narcotics, Investigative Services, and Administrative Services.

Arriving at the NNSO as a lieutenant, he served as the Commander of the Narcotics Criminal Interdiction Unit (NCIU).

A year later, he rose to Captain and became the Judicial Services Administrator.  In 2013, Hughes was promoted to Major and took over as the Professional Standards Bureau Chief. The bureau includes accreditation, investigative operations, and commanding the NCIU.

In 2011, he received the Sheriff’s Medal for meritorious service.  He led an investigation that resulted in the arrest and conviction of a bomb threat suspect.

He also volunteered as a literacy tutor for children at McIntosh Elementary School, helping the students catch up to their grade level in reading, spelling and comprehension.

At the goodbye lunch, Major Hughes said even though he worked more years at Norfolk PD, this felt like home.

We wish Major Hughes all the best in retirement.  We are grateful for his leadership, mentorship, and friendship.
