NNSO receives third consecutive accreditation for delivering professional law enforcement services
Sheriff Gabe Morgan is proud to announce that the Newport News Sheriff’s Office has earned its third consecutive accreditation by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC).
He received the certification decision during the VLEPSC executive board meeting on September 9 in Lynchburg. Accreditation Manager Sgt. M. Davis and Professional Standards Bureau Chief Maj. David Hughes joined him.
Why is it a big deal? It means this agency not only meets but exceeds accepted professional law enforcement standards.
Not all agencies decide to pursue this designation and not all that do receive it; however, Sheriff Gabe Morgan undergoes this review to ensure the NNSO is operating using “best practices” protocols.
For three days in June, outside assessors conducted an exhaustive review of the NNSO’s training, policies and procedures, operations, equipment, and more.
Sheriff Morgan praised his staff for not only meeting but exceeding compliance with 190 standards and more than 700 points of professional law enforcement standards.
“We are committed to excellence and we voluntarily undergo this assessment to ensure we are at our best. We know the public expects nothing less,” Morgan stated.
VLEPSC accreditation requires yearly compliance verification and reporting; on-site assessments are made every four years.
Active members of The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association and the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police make up the commission. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services administers the accreditation program.
