Bonding Information
A person arrested for a crime in the city is taken to the Newport News City Jail for processing, referred to as booking. Part of that process requires the person to appear before a judicial officer, usually the magistrate, for a probable cause hearing and a bail bond hearing.
In lieu of an arrest, you may surrender to the jail 24/7. To do so, go to the receptionist window no the first floor of the Newport News City Jail, which is located at 224 26th Street in downtown.
If you are turning yourself in for an arrest warrant, please bring a photo ID if you own one.
If you are surrendering as part of delayed sentencing, you must bring a photo ID and your court sentencing paperwork.
For all persons surrendering to the jail, do not bring personal belongings other than ID and cash.
The magistrate, based upon §19.2-121 Code of Virginia, determines whether an individual will appear for court proceedings. The magistrate may decide to release the person on a secured bond, an unsecured bond or a promise to appear. If bail is granted, the person or a family member may choose to contact a bail bondsman or bond company.
Note that the Newport News Sheriff’s Office does not provide recommendations.
