TRIAD Program for Seniors
TRIAD is a partnership among law enforcement agencies, senior citizens and organizations geared to support seniors and reduce their fear and victimization.
The key component of TRIAD is the SALT Council (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), which serves as a sounding board to address issues that impact seniors. The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is proud to be an active participant in this important group.
Why is TRIAD necessary?
Older Americans comprise the fastest growing segment of the population. Increased life expectancy is leading to issues and problems for the criminal justice system as communities experience a dramatic increase in the number of older persons.
TRIAD was brought to Virginia in 1995 by the Attorney General’s Office. The first Virginia TRIAD partnership, the Peninsula TRIAD, was signed into existence on May 22, 1995.
What are the objectives of TRIAD?
TRIAD provides the opportunity for the exchange of information between law enforcement and senior citizens. It is the intent of TRIAD to assess the needs and concerns of elderly citizens, thereby providing appropriate resources, programs and services.
The goals of the TRIAD:
- Reduce criminal victimization of older persons
- Improve quality of life for older residents of the community
- Focus on the crime-related needs and concerns of older persons
- Involve the community in implementing solutions
- Enhance delivery of law enforcement services to the elderly
What is Law Enforcement’s role in TRIAD?
The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is committed to helping create a safer community by building partnerships to enhance the quality of life for seniors.
- We educate by sponsoring crime prevention and victim assistance programs for older persons.
- We assist by recruiting and training volunteers to help the Sheriff’s Office.
- We outreach through programs designed to help our housebound seniors.
- We communicate by providing a forum for the community and law enforcement for sharing needs, concerns and to seek community-wide solutions.
When does TRIAD-SALT Council meet?
The Peninsula SALT Council meets on the fourth Thursday of each quarter. Times and locations vary. These meetings are open to the public with guest speakers addressing issues that are of interest to the senior community, such as: needs and concerns of older citizens; alerts to seniors about current frauds, scams, and other crimes; programs such as home security checks, shopping for seniors, and crime prevention seminars
