The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is committed to protecting citizens from identity theft by offering free on-site document shredding.
The annual Shred Day will be held on Saturday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of Todd Stadium. This event is free and open to the public; however, it is not for businesses.
Drivers will enter on Minton Drive and be directed to pull up to one of three shred trucks. NNSO personnel and volunteers will remove papers and put them in bins for shredding.
In 2018, citizens dropped off more than 27,000 pounds of paper for destruction. That’s the most ever for an NNSO Shred Day.
Destroying papers with personal information is a way to keep a thief from using your good name for bad things like opening credit card accounts, trying to claim your tax refund and committing utilities, rental or bank fraud, to name a few examples.
